Excalon completed the successful 132kV ICP connection of Douglas West – 51MW & Kennoxhead Windfarms additional output
extension, uprated to – 60MW, with all as built assets to be adopted by the local Distribution Network Operator, SPEN.
Douglas West Windfarm was connected at the new Douglas North 132kV Collector Substation situated between Coalburn and
Middlemuir substations. The existing circuit is to be upgraded and diverted to connect Douglas North.
The scope of works that Excalon have been contracted to complete includes the design, supply, construction and installation of
the new CSE foundation’s and supporting steelwork for Douglas North, the installation of a new duct route around Poniel
roundabout to divert the existing circuits, the construction of 4x new joint bays, excavation of 2x existing joint bays, the removal
and disposal of the existing 800mm2 cable and all ancillary equipment, the installation of 3 new sections of 1200mm2 cable and 2
new section of 800mm2 cable, the jointing and termination of all new cables, installation of 2x new fibre cables and the testing
and commissioning of the new circuits, adhering to SPEN G81 technical specifications.
Works commenced on site early November 2020 with the duct diversion and the fibre cable installed and tested between
Coalburn and Douglas North prior to Christmas. Works have resumed in the new year with the construction of the joint bays
before moving onto the outage works. The project was completed in April 2021 following successful energisation.
