Case Studies Home > Gorgie To Telford Road 132kV
The Gorgie – Telford Road 132kV cable replacement project comprised of the installation of a twin 132kV ducting system for approx. 6km through the city of Edinburgh. The existing 132kV fluid filled cables between Gorgie and Telford were beginning to fail & leak due to breakdown of the reinforcing tapes, and therefore the cables need to be decommissioned and replaced.
The cables, regarded as at the end of their useful operational life were replaced with 800mm² Al XLPE cables. The scheme also included the excavation and the installation of 132kV electrical ducts, foundation installation, and earthing works.
33kV and 11kV Enabling Diversions
To enable the 132kV duct system to be installed on the proposed route, 33kV and a 11kV circuits were required to be diverted.
Existing and Unchartered Services
As with any major city in the UK there are a vast number of buried mains and services, the majority of which are shown on utility drawings, however a number of redundant and unchartered service runs were encountered. Excalon’s Civils teams are well versed in identifying & mitigating risks associated with unidentified & redundant services.
Fibre Chamber Installation
Along with the 132kV duct system runs, fibre optic cables also had a duct system and required 21 chambers along the route.
Re-Surfacing and Re-Lining
Approximately 1 kilometer of carriageway was planed and resurfaced. Specialist reinstatement including cycle lanes formed part of the works.
Traffic Management
The project involved significant Traffic Management planning & reource throughout the route spanning the centre of Edinburgh.
Works were monitored & managed via Excalon’s customized TM management system, utilized to design & schedule workflows, create reports & locate teams, jobs & devices.
A Full time 24hr TSCO (Traffic Safety Control Officer) was in place throughout the works with dedicated In house operatives & supervisors deployed as pedestrian POCs / marshall’s / Banksmen. Regular TM inspections were conducted & recorded via the live system for immediate distribution & action.
Stakeholder Management
With the route stretching 6k across Edinburgh there was a high volume of residents, football and national stadiums hosting international sporting events/concerts, & major bus routes.
Coordination and communication was essential, with weekly council and transport meetings and resident face to face interaction along with a detailed communication plan agreed with the council and rolled out by the management team.
Excalon was recognised by SPEN at the supplier of the year awards for their continued commitment to customer service.
